ABQ-LIVE: What was the idea behind the club in the beginning?
Effex: We had worked together at another bar and learned a lot of ‘what not to do’ and when that bar closed there was a huge void in the community that we wanted to see filled. We were naive enough to think we could build something to fill that void.
ABQ-Live: What inspired you to open ABQ’s largest gay club?
Effex: Over the years we have evolved to a place that everyone goes to and we are so happy for that. We love that there is no judgment. Our clientele is amazing, and we appreciate their patronage. We have such a wide range of people walking through our doors every weekend. We are proud of who we are and wouldn’t change that for anything!
ABQ-LIVE: Did you anticipate your club becoming such a cultural icon?
Effex: Not in a million years. It was one of those things that you can’t even imagine. We hoped we would be successful and that people would give us a chance, but you never know in this industry. We didn’t have a lot of money; we just had a concept and a dream. I remember a night that first weekend looking at Bobby and almost in tears saying, “I can’t believe we did this.”
ABQ-LIVE: How do you maintain a fun, inviting, and high-energy atmosphere?
Effex: We love what we do! We both love to go out and have a good time and we want to have a place where we want to go! We have great DJ’s and a great team of promoters and staff that make it so easy to maintain that environment. If we aren’t having fun working then no one will have fun when they come.
ABQ-LIVE: What makes Effex so unique compared to other clubs in the downtown area?
Effex: We are Effex, we have so much under one roof. We offer four different venues in one. We have the downstairs main club, then the lounge which is a completely different contemporary style, add in the rooftop (unique to any other rooftop/patio we’ve ever seen), and then we added Adieux last year offering a place to ‘pregame’ and get a great meal.
ABQ-LIVE: With the competition downtown, What has been your formula for making Effex so successful?
Effex: Everyone is welcome, we have such a wide variety of clientele and it’s awesome! We also support other venues downtown and try to work together. If we work together we can turn downtown into somewhere really cool. We have been so blessed almost 5 years now, and we want to help other places be successful. It benefits all of us in the end.
ABQ-LIVE: With the Huge amount of expansion since you opened, what is on the horizon for effex nightclub or you two as owners?
Effex: We still have another 6,000 square feet we would like to build out next year and really provide an ultra lounge environment like nothing else has in this town. You’ll have to keep coming to see what’s next…
ABQ-LIVE: Do you have any events that you are looking forward to in the near future?
EFFEX: We have quite a few fun events coming up! We will be kicking off a series called “Land of enTRAPment” January 16th featuring Jayceeoh with local support by Panda and Takah. Then on February 6th, we team up with Redfish Ent and Havoc to bring you Brazzabelle, which will then take us to Valentine’s Day where you are sure to find love at Effex! We are booking more shows/parties everyday and will announce them as they approach. Stay tuned to our social media sites and our website at www.effexabq.com for more info. And before we know it, it will be time for Pride which is June 13th!
ABQ-LIVE: For the readers reading this, is there anything you would like to say?
EFFEX: We said it before and will say it again, we have been so blessed! When we started this dream in 2008 we had no idea what we were in for, no idea it would take 2 years to open the doors, and we had no clue what we would become. We are so grateful for the support we receive everyday, in return we continue to try to evolve, and provide something new for everyone to enjoy and talk about.
