What began decades ago as intimate family picnics and gatherings by the founding “Albuquerque Nisei Club” has blossomed into the state’s premier event for experiencing Japanese culture. The festival’s journey mirrors its growth—from humble beginnings in restaurant parking lots to venues like the Civic Plaza and the National Hispanic Cultural Center. After a triumphant return post-pandemic and outgrowing its previous home, Aki Matsuri has found the perfect setting at the Expo New Mexico. This central location in the International District offers ample parking, accessibility by public transit, and shaded, comfortable spaces for everyone to enjoy.

This year’s festival is honored to feature a headline performance by the world-renowned San Jose Taiko. Founded in 1973, San Jose Taiko is one of the oldest and most respected taiko groups in North America.
