COVID-19 Update from Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham includes rising cases and results in tougher restrictions

July 9, 2020 by Nichole Harwood

Thursday, July 9, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham and health officials addressed New Mexico on the administration’s COVID-19 response.

COVID-19 Update – July 9, 2020

Posted by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham on Thursday, July 9, 2020

The update was live-streamed on the governor’s official Facebook page at 4 p.m. July 9. Grisham began her address by updating New Mexicans on the COVID-19 Case Update announcing the total number of positive cases at 14,251 total with 238 new positive results as of Thursday. There are currently 154 individuals currently hospitalized with 32 on ventilators. New Mexico has had a total of 533 deaths, with six new deaths as of Thursday.

Grisham urged New Mexican’s to practice social distancing regardless of age. Of the new deaths on Thursday, two of which included individuals in their thirties.

“I’m asking everyone immediately to wear your mask, restrict where you’re going if you can work from home, work from home. Do not engage in unnecessary activities where you’re coming into contact even with family members because it’s contributing to the transmission in this state,” Grisham said.

After updating New Mexican’s on the rise of COVID-19 in New Mexico Grisham amended several public health orders to take place effectively Monday, July 13.  These orders Grisham told New Mexican’s were to help flatten the rising curve of COVID-19 in New Mexico.

Effective Monday, July 13 Indoor seating at restaurants and breweries are prohibited.

-Restaurants and breweries may continue to operate patio or outdoor seating at 50% of maximum occupancy adhering to COVID-Safe Practices

-Restaurants may continue to provide carry out and delivery services

– Breweries may continue to provide curbside pickup services

*Restaurants who remain open despite the prohibition could face up to a $5,000 a day fine.

Effective Monday, July 13, State Parks are not open to out-of-state residents

-Visitors must demonstrate proof of residency (state ID, state license plate) or will not be permitted entry

-Camping at state parks remains prohibited; state parks are open for day-use only

-Visitors must adhere to physical distancing. *The virus can still spread in groups when closely congregating outdoors.

School reopenings are currently depending on how the state is containing the virus currently, no contact sports (football, soccer) will be permitted this fall.

-Modified schedules to be evaluated for potentially later in the school year.

-Other non-contact sports are under review and will likely have delayed starts to seasons.

*Fall sports will not happen if schools cannot reopen.

After the announcement, Grisham opened the floor to media members, where she answered questions regarding no contact sports as well as the future of New Mexico sports teams, including New Mexico United. While no decision regarding these teams has been officially made, Grisham said she would be updating New Mexican on the administration’s decision soon.

Near the end of the announcement, Grisham thanked New Mexican’s for their hard work while cautioning citizens who are not taking the virus seriously.

“I’m going to do my very best. I owe that to all the New Mexicans who have been wearing masks every day who have been socially distanced, who are getting deliveries who aren’t leaving their houses, who are telecommuting for work, who are homeschooling their kids, who are entertaining their kids and their families, who haven’t seen their loved ones in assisted livings or in nursing homes, I could go on. To those New Mexicans, I say thank you for saving countless lives.” Grisham said. “And to the New Mexicans who may have made a mistake or weren’t very sure, who didn’t understand the public health order and for those of you who think you just don’t have to adhere the message is: We all have to do it, and that’s what we expect going forward.”

MASKS: Must be worn by the provider and the individual receiving our services, throughout the duration of the service. With our industry being in such close contact (which we miss!!) this will keep us both safe. We recommend the masks that loop around your ears as opposed to tying around your head! It’ll be easier for us to work our magic around you!!

ARRIVING at Culture Club: Sadly, all waiting area furniture has been moved out of Culture Club for the time being. We ask that you do not enter our salon until you have text your stylist upon arrival. When your stylist is ready, they will proceed and follow sanitation protocol with you. Following social distancing rules, we ask that only the person who is receiving the service is allowed to attend the appointment. In the event that a chaperone is essential to the client receiving the service, PLEASE communicate and make arrangements with your stylist. We understand this may be a challenge for parents whose children currently are not in school, unfortunately this is a protocol that was mandated by the state board. We will have a mandated limited occupancy rule, and will have to comply by law.

Blow OUTS:: As a collective we have decided that until further notice, the safest option for everyone is to forego blowouts and styling. Spending that extra time perfecting our service and photographing it, is our FAVE. But we will take the recommendations given to us in not blow drying and revisit the options often.

Coffee BAR and SNACKS: This being our FAVORITE amenity to offer to our guests. We regret to inform you that we will be suspending our special corner until further notice. We understand that hunger does in fact exist! While you process, feel free to snack in your car!

Albuquerque Nurses stay strong during Covid-19

June 11, 2020 by Nichole Harwood

By Nichole Harwood

ABQ-Live the Magazine would like to thank all the nurses that keep New Mexico strong. During this time our community leans on your strength and courage in fighting this pandemic.

We were honored to sit down with two Albuquerque nurses to share their stories with our readership.

The Night Nurse

On May 14 Revé Silva shared a Facebook post summarizing a day at work for her mother Rebecca Silva. Rebecca Silva is a registered nurse at Lovelace Hospital in downtown Albuquerque. The post detailed a particularly difficult day: a patient who had lost their voice due to the coronavirus, cried silently at her inability to speak with her daughter and family.

“My mom’s doing the thing anybody would dread doing most right now, but she still puts in the same effort and compassion that she did when she was excited about her job,” Silva said in her post.

Silva’s mother is just one of many nurses who put their lives on the line to aid in New Mexico’s fight against the coronavirus, helping their patients both physically and emotionally recover.

The night Revé Silva’s post described was a particularly emotional experience for Rebecca Silva. The patient is from a family of nine, all of who contracted the coronavirus. Her patient was the last member of the family to recover. The emotional encounter was particularly impactful and Silva can still remember the patient’s tears, along with her own, as she told the patient how much her family missed her. Afterward, Silva connected the patient with her family on the phone, and although the patient couldn’t talk because her voice was a whisper, she was able to still hear her daughter and family.

“Since then she’s been in touch with her daughter and I did see her get stronger and she got her feeding tube out and I believe is on her way home,” Silva said.

Nurse

While wearing the mask, face shield and gown is difficult, Silva said she still sees working with the patients and trying to help them with simple things, such as comfort measures, as a positive experience. As a night nurse Silva’s work can be exhausting, but she said her family has been very supportive, with her younger children working hard to be quiet during the day so their mother can rest for work.

While Silva is appreciative of the community’s help, she hopes the public begins to see the importance of cleanliness. Silva believes that housekeepers are essential everywhere, all the time.

“I would like to see that cleanliness becomes a bigger part of our lives,” Silva said. “I know I noticed in the past, not only in hospitals but just in the community, in grocery stores, housekeeping has been cut everywhere, and they’re some of the first workers to go when we need to tighten up budgets and so forth. I really feel like we need to get back to the basics of just keeping things clean.”

Silva encourages the public to continue to wear masks and social distance. Despite certain members of the public thinking the coronavirus isn’t a great concern, Silva said she thinks there will be a surge of cases after the state reopens.

“We got to help each other out and without everybody’s concern for each other the pandemic and our situation here in New Mexico is just going to get worse,” Silva said.

While Silva herself would like to see events open up, she encourages the public to put everyone’s safety first. One event Silva missed seeing was the Gathering of Nations, which was canceled earlier this year. She was reminded of the event when she heard her 80-year-old patient singing in Navajo.

“He told me that his song was about Mother Earth and Father Sky. I don’t know, I just loved to hear his singing. It was a beautiful thing for me,” she said.

For Revé Silva, her mother’s work is beautiful and she said she admires her for her courage during this time. Attached to her post is a photo of her mother that Silva said was taken to show everyone what her mother has to wear at work.

“You can tell that she even smiled behind that mask,” Silva’s post said. “The same mask she cries behind when she gets tired. Whatever your job is right now, whether it’s as a healthcare provider or an improvising homeschool teacher, whether your job is to go to the store today or even just to stay sane as you cry at home into a jar of nutella, whatever your job is today, in this world, just do it. But do it bravely. And do it with kindness.”

The ER Nurse

The Emergency Room can be a scary place to work, but for Presbyterian nurse Tamara Brooks, being there for patients is the most important thing she can be doing right now.

“The hardest part about this time is that patients aren’t allowed visitors right now when they are in the hospital,” Brooks said. “I work in the ER and it’s a scary place, especially if you are a patient and have no one with you. That’s why it is very critical at this time of being a nurse to be there for my patients and put myself in their shoes. Seeing patients or anyone for that matter die alone is one of the worst things to see.”

Despite the difficulty of her job, Brooks said she has seen the community come together for frontline workers. Multiple local businesses, Brooks said, have been donating their services to help the hospital staff during this time.

“I’m sad that it took something like this for the public to see how important healthcare workers are, but I’m glad people are aware now. And everyone remember, hospitals aren’t just made up of doctors and nurses. There are so many other titles that deserve recognition, don’t forget about them,” Brooks said.

Nurse

Much like Silva, Brooks said her family has been extremely supportive, with many people reaching out to her to check up.

“The hardest part about all of this is not being able to have that social interaction that we are all used to having. I’ve had lots of FaceTime dates with friends and family. Just making themselves available for me 24/7 to talk to has made the world of a difference,” she said.

Brooks encourages the public to stay safe by ensuring they follow proper handwashing guidelines using antibacterial soap for a full 20 seconds.

While she looks forward to everything returning to normal she knows that her most important job right now is to keep her patients calm and safe.

“This is a highly stressful time for everyone,” Brooks said. “Being able to have a job where I can care for the sick is such a huge blessing to me and even more important now.”

Brooks encourages everyone to realize they are in this together.

“You’re not the only one who’s having a rough time right now, I promise you,” she said. “Stick it out. Work together to keep our community and state, safe and healthy.

Dealing hope – Artist spreads awareness and inspiration to communities through art

May 19, 2020 by Kori Kobayashi

The West Coast artist LA Hope Dealer is dealing hope and awareness with her new art project centered around the Covid-19 pandemic. Albuquerque could be next and we’re excited to sit down with artist Corie Mattie to talk about what she’s doing and how she’s dealing out inspiration during this world wide pandemic.

Interview by Kori Kobayashi | Photos courtesy of artist Corie Mattie

The word on the street is you may be planning a mural or two here in Albuquerque?  Can you give us any info on the location or what to look forward to?

Well, if I can find a few walls in Albuquerque, I would love to do some LA Hope Dealer murals there. I think the yellow background complements the New Mexico terrain. If this comes to fruition, it would be ideal to incorporate images and ideas native to the city.

You’re living in Los Angeles currently but originally from Philadelphia, how does the city you live in help shape your art?

I have an East Coast mindset and attitude, but my heart lies on the West Coast. Los Angeles has a competitive art scene so it keeps me on my feet. The city motivates me to constantly improve my technique and experiment with new mediums. I love being surrounded by so many creatives because it constantly challenges me to think of new concepts and think outside the box.

What were you working on before Covid-19 hit?

Before Covid-19, I was working on a lot of custom pieces for clients. They would come to me with general ideas, colors, and themes and then allow me to put my own creative twist onto the final piece. I just completed a Kobe Bryant tribute mural and was in the middle of generating concepts for another one when all of my projects basically froze due to the pandemic and quarantine.

When did you get the name LA Hope Dealer?  What does that title/ name mean to you?

I have a list of ideas in my phone that I keep in-hand. I had the idea for “Hope Dealer” for awhile now but never thought it was the right time to execute. When the pandemic hit, I thought it would be an appropriate time to introduce the LA Hope Dealer. I want to bring positivity in a unique and creative way to the world, as well as awareness and inspiration to communities. I added LA to be more specific to Los Angeles, however, I also wanted the LA to stand for “the” in Spanish so it could be applied not only to the Los Angeles community but the global community as well.

LA Hope dealer is a movement I want others to feel part of and involved in. This isn’t meant to be just my project. That’s why I have been sending pieces to several cities throughout the United States—so even non-artists can post pictures, use their creativity and be connected. I compare it to a creative fight club—in which “hope dealers” are popping up all over the world with help from my creative direction. The LA Hope Dealer movement is meant to promote individual creativity while feeling part of something massive.

In a recent interview, you were quoted saying,“No one at this time has experienced something like this, any age group, anyone,” What does it mean to you to be an artist during this time and what responsibly do you feel artists have?

This time period will be written about for years to come in textbooks and historical references. I believe a unique opportunity has arisen for artists during Covid-19. Just like during the Black Plague in the 14th century, a period of strong artistic expression is underway. Sometimes you can’t describe a situation or feeling with words, so that’s where artistic expression becomes more relatable and valued.

Since this is a global issue, pandemic-related pieces are appealing to a wider range of viewers, in an unprecedented way. These pieces convey universal truths across cultures, values, age, gender, situations, etc. Artists have the chance to challenge, justify and comfort the feelings we may be experiencing, while providing clarity and reassurance during such a confusing and weird time.

Do you have any new pieces you’re planning on releasing and can you give us any clues?

Yes, I do! I am constantly thinking of future pieces. My work needs to be relevant and coincide with what’s going on in the world. I have to study the pattern and predict what might happen and what will appeal to people’s emotions and daily life. Unfortunately, I cannot give you any hints—it’s more fun to be surprised, anyway.

When did you start creating street art? What is it about street art that draws you to it?

I never thought of myself as a street artist, to be honest. In my opinion, there was always a pseudonym attached to street artists, and I never wanted to be incognito. I always wanted my name attached to the pieces I was doing and the voice I was conveying.  This is all new to me—I never want to paint illegally, or break the law. I am unique in a way because I am committed to being a “legal” street artist—getting permission from business owners, putting up cardboard signs that can be easily removed and completing most of my work in broad daylight.

Are there other artists that you follow or you’re inspired by? Who are they and why?

I fell in love with Banksy’s work about seven years ago. I think he is the most clever street artist I have ever come across. He creates images about current social and political issues that have a touch of dark humor while relaying deeper messages. I think his signature stenciling technique is part of the reason I began painting black and white images.

How is the artist community in LA supporting each other in this unique time of social distancing?

The L.A. art community is literally coming together to paint the town. The barren, boarded-up windows across Los Angeles look like something out of The Walking Dead. We, as artists, took on the responsibility to brighten the community and showcase our work with temporary murals throughout the city.

You have new pieces popping up throughout LA. Where else would you like to create? Do you have a wall or location you’ve always wanted to paint?

I truly would love to paint everywhere and anywhere. The option to slow down is absolutely not an option for me. When the quarantine completely eases up, I would love to be able to paint in New York City, Miami, Paris, Rome, etc. All of these cities, after Albuquerque, of course. I never want to limit myself to a specific city or just major cities. I want to be accessible to everyone all over the world.

Where can people find out more about you?

I post most of my work and process on Instagram (@coriemattie) #lahopedealer, but I also have the website www.lahopedealer.com.

We understand you’re also giving back to the homeless by giving them free masks to wear. How are you doing this and how can people help or donate?

I partnered with an L.A-based company called Ello Masks. For every mask sold, one is donated to Skid Row. I think this is a crucial time to give back to the less fortunate. The best thing people can do is buy a mask (listed on my site)! I also set up my Venmo specifically for the LA Hope Dealer project, so any money donated gets put back into the project—whether it’s supplies, shipping pieces to other cities, paying other creatives to help, etc.

According to the NY Times, “The recent Covid-19 Impact Survey for Artists and Creative Workers showed that 95 percent of artists have lost income and 62 percent have become fully unemployed since the crisis began.”  In what ways are artists like yourself surviving? And can you share any insight on art programs like the “Back to the Streets” campaign from the nonprofit Beautify?

Once all of this hit, most projects that artists were working on came to a complete standstill. There are a handful of artists-relief programs circling in the community trying to give back to struggling artists. It’s truly not easy surviving during this time—it’s not easy surviving as an artist even without a pandemic. Local city art councils are helping artists by trying to raise money and awareness for them, but it still isn’t a significant amount. I think there’s a common misconception that we get paid for all these walls we do. I have painted roughly 10 walls, and I have seen a little bit of money from two walls—money that basically just covered supplies and travel.

Beautify is an excellent nonprofit. It’s basically a platform that connects muralists with businesses that want their walls painted. Beautify facilitates the communication between artist and business and is there every step of the way. The nonprofit opens up more opportunities and connections for artists than they may have had before.

 What’s next for you?

LA Hope Dealer has become a part of me—it is my alter-ego. I always had the vision to inspire people to take the path less traveled and follow their dreams. I wanted to be a living, breathing, accessible example of that. Yes, LA Hope Dealer emerged during a global pandemic, but it is important that I continue making relevant pieces post-Covid-19. Right now, we’re all in the same boat facing different storms. However, after this, people will be going through different issues, illnesses and experiences, and I think it’s important that I still deal Hope and motivate people to keep going.

In a world of constant media, advertising, and fake news how do you know what to believe or what to promote through your art?

I try to promote or touch on issues that touch my soul and light a fire within me. Artistic expression creates a message that needs to resonate to viewers. I might create a piece that means something specific to me, but someone else takes it a completely different way. Isn’t that what art is for? It is meant to touch people—whether it’s the way I intended or not.

Any last words, thoughts or hope to deal out to our ABQ-Live readers?

I truly hope I continue to create images and sayings that validate that we are not alone in what or how we are feeling, while adding hints of motivation and inspiration for people to achieve whatever they sought out to do. We only have one life, why waste it?
