Avengers: Endgame celebrates 11-years of Marvel

May 15, 2019 by Nichole Harwood

By August Edwards

After 22 movies, the world’s most excruciating soap opera has come to an end with “Avengers: Endgame.” What has compelled us to watch and re-watch for over a decade, has left us with victories, individual and shared, to celebrate.

We all know the good guys are going to win at the end, which might be welcome encouragement with the knowledge that we’ll have to sit through three hours and one minute to receive a payoff. The mystery of Endgame — or, the potential for spoilers — for those who haven’t seen it yet, does not lie within the overall arc of action, but within the emotional resonance, each character brings to the screen.

Does it warrant the length? Of course, because of how it is. Everything about this film is significant. Substantial. Even the subtleties (whatever “subtlety” means within this franchise) are grandiose; characters that are bound to have minimal screen-time still beg us to savor every moment they deliver—and it is easy to do so. “Endgame” moves fast. The humor is nuanced, the jokes land. While transitional moments rely on laughs to keep the story moving, this does not obscure the dark moments that are paced long enough to solicit tears.

Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), namely, cannot find a way to live with the past; they are haunted to the point of torture. Unlike “Infinity War,” Thanos seems to be more of a plot device than a real obstacle. This could be for many reasons; we already know what his motives are, and, simply put, he’s already done what he’s done. In this fashion, Thanos becomes a metaphor for what the Avengers are fighting.

We are at an age where “spoiling” is a sin. I will not share anything about the film that might upset somebody, but I would like to share what “Avengers: Endgame” has taught me about spoilers in light of how our heroes battle demons from the past.

We’re afraid of losing the particular feeling of raw emotion that comes with experiencing something for the first time. We might even put pressure on ourselves to feel something to the degree at which we believe it should be explored. We recognize a smaller payoff in finding out the secrets before we’re meant to. Not only do we react with anger, but we are also filled with a sort of grim realization — that, in context, the feeling we’ve long awaited just won’t hit the same.

While we can’t go back in time and fix the past to how we would like it to be, we can choose what we do with our present. The Avengers in Endgame has provided a compelling argument for living each moment to the fullest, even if we think we know what the outcome will be.

“Avengers: Endgame” is enjoyable. Watching noble characters we love to fight for what they love is, without a doubt, inspiring. It is freeing to be able to cry and laugh next to someone who is also crying and laughing in the same darkness with the same glow emanating onto their faces. I think these feelings can be accomplished even if something has been spoiled. It might all depend on how present we are.

Props to the Master

June 2, 2017 by Brianna Mortensen

Imagine Thor without a hammer, Cast Away without Wilson the volleyball, or Back to the Future without a Delorean. These are only a few examples of movie props that have played essential roles in their films.

Photo courtesy of Joshua Aragon – Actor Michale Shannon is propped by Aragon in preparation for a scene.

Acquiring props for a production is possibly one of the most important jobs in the film industry. The coordinators behind each material detail on set are known as property masters, or prop masters for short.

Joshua Aragon is a local prop master who was has been in the entertainment business since he was 5 years old. “I am in charge of everything an actor touches, picks up or eats,” he said. “I maintain all props on set with the actors.”

A scene cannot be shot without props. It is important to recognize that every aspect of a movie is carefully choreographed and planned. The presentation that audience members interpret is crafted down to the tiniest detail. This could be a bag of chips sitting on a counter in the background or a phone hanging on the wall.

Audiences don’t typically pay attention to every single object in each scene, but it’s important to note that no object is naturally occurring. Everything we see has been placed by prop masters like Aragon.

He has a script he follows, just like actors do. He thoroughly studies each of his scenes and manages all of the props for those scenes for the duration of the film.

Aragon has worked on several sets for major motion pictures like Sicario and Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials. His involvement in such well-known productions has allowed him to interact with countless successful showbiz members.

“I have been blessed to work with some of the biggest names in the industry,” he said. Denzel Washington, Jennifer Aniston, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Wahlberg and Jerry Bruckheimer are among hundreds of notable entertainers that Aragon has met while on the job.

Although Albuquerque is his home, Aragon’s favorite perk to managing props is traveling. Movies are rarely filmed in one place, so he gets to see the country while also befriending his childhood idols.

Aragon gives back to his Albuquerque community through his contribution to the film industry. “New Mexico benefits from film tremendously. We are constantly buying, renting and building props locally,” he said. His last film had a $600,000 budget for props, and 90% of those funds went to local businesses here in New Mexico.

We don’t often think about the importance of props because they are abundantly present in every film. However, movies cannot be made without them.

Aragon is currently working on his 30th major motion picture. He explained that his job is not easy, but the people he works with make it enjoyable. “My experiences have been amazing,” he said. “I love how we’re all family.”

Back to the Future II hysteria!

October 21, 2015 by Josh Vanlandingham

bACKtoThefutureFeaturedImage

Great Scott! Today is the actual date Michael J Fox’s Marty McFly and Christopher Lloyd’s Doc Brown traveled to in the hit 80’s futuristic film, Back to the Future II, now look at all the cool stuff we get!

Many corporate entities who were involved in the film have jumped on board, recognizing the now iconic date of 10.21.2015, and are releasing products that were featured.

Below are three of those products and one incredible user-made mashup of the Adult Swim hit show Rick and Morty, which has inherent similarities to the Back to the Future story.

While there is still no actual Hover-board (Come on science!),  we do have self-lacing shoes and of course Marty’s sweet black Toyota.

1. Toyota has fully unveiled its 2016 Tacoma inspired by the pickup truck used by Marty McFly in Back to the Future Part II.

I was in love with the all black truck Marty had in his garage. I guess I wasn’t the only one!

For more information on the Tacoma: http://www.leftlanenews.com/toyota-unveils-back-to-the-futureinspired-tacoma-90014.html#ixzz3pFCGUVSR

2. Back To The Future’s Self-Lacing Nikes Are Finally Real!

Hopefully we can get this bad boys in different colors. I don’t know if I can rock the Denver Nugget blue for too long. Expected release date Spring 2016.

For more information onthe self-lacing sneakers: http://www.wired.com/2015/10/nike-air-mags-bttf-shoe-real/

3. Pepsi Perfect

Wait, Pepsi wasn’t perfect already? Sounds like they may have already sold out of this sweet product. Lame.

For more information on Pepsi Perfect:

4. Rick and Morty user made mashup.

With the already ever present resemblance to Back to the Future this makes so much damn sense. Great work!
