Summer may have only just begun, but for some of us, all eyes are fixed on Autumn. The cooler weather, the warmer fashions, Pumpkin Spiced everything, and of course, the reason for the season, Halloween.
Once the Fourth of July has passed, the used fireworks have been cleaned up and the gunpowder smell has settled, the next spot on the holiday horizon is All Hallow’s Eve, a time of year for celebrating the weird, the spooky, and the stranger things of this world, and New Mexico’s gateway to the Halloween season is the returning Morgue & Krypt Horror Fest.
Entering their second year, Morgue & Krypt brings to New Mexico a unique blend of horror conventions, film festivals, rock concerts, and pageantry, for a live spectacle that needs to be seen to be unde
rstood. After last year’s line-up of celebrity guests such as Tony Todd and Jeffrey Combs, live performances from local bands and DJs, a Zombie Pinup Pageant, and guest panels teaching acting, special effects, and screenwriting, this year’s promises to be something special. Putting together a festival of that magnitude is no easy task, but founders Jeff and Bethany Sedden are up for it, working year-round to build, maintain, and promote New Mexico’s only horror-specific convention.
Being in the Horror scene is never without controversy, but M&K keeps their eyes focused on helping the community by using their festival to do some good in the world. Last year’s festival benefited the Big Brothers and Sisters of Central New Mexico, and this year, the team is expanding into direct community outreach, including a series of videos on YouTube educating audiences on proper convention etiquette. Morgue & Krypt also works closely with other groups in the local horror community like Spectral Youth and Androidvision to keep the community thriving year-round, with midnight B-movie screenings at the Guild, as well as concerts and contests all over town.

So what does the future hold for the folks at Morgue & Krypt Horror Festival? Well, this year’s festival has moved up to the Isleta Resort and Casino, where they will be featuring horror legends such as Bill Mosely and Linnea Quigley, live music, a horror film festival, and the returning Zombie Pin-up Pageant, and a Cosplay Competition as well. Also returning is last year’s cosplay favorite, Dr Smilee, who has become an official mascot of the M&K family, and is out spreading the gospel of gore at events in the real world, promoting the festival one scare at a time. To top it all off, more than 100 vendors are signed on, from artists to retailers, to filmmakers, and everything in between, and we at ABQLive will be there, running the photo booth, sponsored by the local spook-masters at New Mexico Escape Room, so make sure you come by and say “Hi” on your annual trip through the world of horror.
