ABQ’s newest immersive dining experience is out of this world

December 6, 2018 by Brenda Paiz

An Albuquerque company has officially launched its interactive dining experience in the heart of downtown. Located next to Duel Brewery, 610 Central Ave. is the new home to StoryLab Interactive’s latest project – a dining experience that was truly out of this world.

Upon entering, guests are welcomed and immediately can pick up on the theme, which is currently called “Space Returns”. The dining experience starts off by encouraging guests to explore the open space and interactive art while making sure to get that prime photo for your Instagram (FYI- it will be your coolest Insta photo.)

The five course meal was not only delicious and thoughtfully presented but even the menu contained plenty of clever “space” puns and wordplay for each item (a “Rocket Salad” arugula dish and a “Starfruit Halo Halo” dessert, just to name a few).  The dinner was presented and served by Savor and with each course, a perfectly paired wine was served as well.

Service was impeccable as each dish was explained before we “dug in”.

Space-guided voices and different galactic scenarios continued as the remaining courses were served. At one point, guests were even presented with a squash bisque in what looked very similar to a “space bag” before using it as an exquisite sauce for the salmon and short ribs course.

The immersive dining experience provided a spotlight for where your plate sat and the lights responded to your moving hands – which made it impossible to NOT interact and appreciate what was happening with those around you.

The homegrown startup company will continue these dinners every Friday and Saturday night at 610 Central Ave. and tickets are required so be sure to grab tickets in advance.

Overall, the entire experience was unlike anything that this city has offered before. Sure, there have been interactive art exhibits but StoryLab Interactive has taken that to the next level by appealing to all senses with this unique dining experience.

ABQ SUMMERFEST 2018 preview

July 19, 2018 by Nichole Harwood

Since the first Summerfest came to Civic Plaza in 1980, the city wide event has returned each year featuring free community events, children’s activities, an artisan market full of handcrafted goods, and discounts from local businesses.

From their Summerfest has only grown in size with now four local Summerfest events widespread across Albuquerque. The first of the events kicked off on June 9 with Heights Summerfest located in North Domingo Baca Park. Still three more events have yet to come with Route 66’s Summerfest located in Nob Hill on July 21, Downtown Summerfest located on Civic Plaza August 4 and Westside Summerfest at the Cottonwood Mall on August 18.

“The goal of the event series is to offer free, family-friendly safe events for the community,” said Bree Ortiz, Events and Operations Manager with the city of Albuquerque, Cultural Services Department.

A large part of summerfest includes music from performers who are both national and local. One performer is Grammy Award-winning singer, Irma Thomas who will be the headliner for Route 66’s Summerfest.

“For the national acts, we work with talent agencies to get an artist within our budget that is available at the time of the event,” Ortiz said. “For the local artists, we have most bands reaching out to us for an opportunity to perform.”

With  hundreds of local businesses involved in each of the Summerfest events attendees can expect artisans, food trucks, and breweries at the event. Additionally, each Summerfest will have its own unique atmosphere such as Route 66’s Summerfest which will be showcased on the streets of Nob Hill.

This allows for attendees of the event to support local businesses while enjoying the outdoors and other events offered. With this, all of the Summerfest events are different and continue to be a quality event series that the community can look forward to, Ortiz said.

“This series had grown and evolved over the years by taking best practices and current desires into consideration,” she said.

Owner of Nob Hill Bar and Grill, Nicole Kapnison describes Summerfest as an event that truly supports local. This done through local food, local drinks, local art,and local talent., she said

Her business has been part of Summerfest for as long as she can remember, Kapnison said.

“It (Route 66’s Summerfest) really is the best summerfest in the city because it incorporates so many local businesses,” Kapnison said. “It’s rare that we get to shut down central and set up a party in the middle of the streets. It’s a great event for family and friends and great for the local economy.”

Anything that drives business away from large chains, even only for a night to Nob Hill and historic Route 66 is something Nob Hill Bar and Grill loves to be a part of, Kapnison said.

As a local business owner herself Kapnison emphasizes the importance of local business as they are what keep Albuquerque alive and flourishing, she said.

“Events like this, where almost all the businesses are local, give us all a chance to showcase our hard work, talent, and dedication to the city,” Kapnison said.

Kapnison hopes this year’s Summerfest will be bigger and better than ever as past Albuquerque Rapid Transit (ART) construction has caused many to avoid downtown Albuquerque, she said.

However with the upcoming Summerfest stretching down Nob Hill, Kapnison urges attendees to come and enjoy the event while drinking responsibly, taking Uber or Lyft, and spending their your local dollars on Route 66. “Construction is over, the streets are beautiful, and we want people to remember that supporting local is what drives our economy,” Kapnison said.

Disney will be leaving Netflix.. Sights set on it’s own streaming services

August 9, 2017 by Kori Kobayashi

This may be the hardest break up yet.. Disney has decided to end it’s  relationship with Netflix and start it’s own direct to consumer streaming service.  Stop. Take a deep, everything will be ok.  Nothing will happen over night, but expect some of your favorite Disney titles as well as Pixar titles to go missing towards the end of 2018.

[huge_it_slider id=”17″]

The upside? The new platform will be the hub for all Disney movies coming up, beginning with big names such “Toy Story 4”, “Frozen 2” and the upcoming live action “Lion King”.

What’s more? The company is also set to launch it’s own ESPN video streaming service in early 2018.  The new platform from Disney will feature over 10,000 sporting events each year from MLB, MLS and NHL to both collegiate sorts and tennis Grand Slam tournaments.

How does the Disney Company, one of the world’s leading producers and providers of entertainment and information, plan to do all this?

In short the answer is BAM! Well more specifically BAM Tech, for which Disney now owns a majority ownership worth $1.58 billion. The new acquisition, “represents a big strategic shift for the company..having control of a platform we’ve been very impressed with.. would give us control of our destiny,” said Disney CEO Bob Iger in an interview with CNBC’s Julia Boorstin.

Netflix stock dropped more than 5 percent after the announcement from Disney.

Back to the Future II hysteria!

October 21, 2015 by Josh Vanlandingham

bACKtoThefutureFeaturedImage

Great Scott! Today is the actual date Michael J Fox’s Marty McFly and Christopher Lloyd’s Doc Brown traveled to in the hit 80’s futuristic film, Back to the Future II, now look at all the cool stuff we get!

Many corporate entities who were involved in the film have jumped on board, recognizing the now iconic date of 10.21.2015, and are releasing products that were featured.

Below are three of those products and one incredible user-made mashup of the Adult Swim hit show Rick and Morty, which has inherent similarities to the Back to the Future story.

While there is still no actual Hover-board (Come on science!),  we do have self-lacing shoes and of course Marty’s sweet black Toyota.

1. Toyota has fully unveiled its 2016 Tacoma inspired by the pickup truck used by Marty McFly in Back to the Future Part II.

I was in love with the all black truck Marty had in his garage. I guess I wasn’t the only one!

2. Back To The Future’s Self-Lacing Nikes Are Finally Real!

Hopefully we can get this bad boys in different colors. I don’t know if I can rock the Denver Nugget blue for too long. Expected release date Spring 2016.

3. Pepsi Perfect

Wait, Pepsi wasn’t perfect already? Sounds like they may have already sold out of this sweet product. Lame.

4. Rick and Morty user made mashup.

With the already ever present resemblance to Back to the Future this makes so much damn sense. Great work!
