Since their inception in 2013, Albuquerque’s own The Riddims have been carving out a unique space in the reggae music scene with their distinctive “High Desert Reggae” sound.
The band’s journey began when Myles Chavez, Chris Cruz, and Donovan Ortiz, all veterans of various musical projects, found themselves at a crossroads after their previous bands dissolved. Drawn together by their mutual love for reggae, they formed The Riddims, a band that would quickly become a local favorite. Their debut performance, alongside The Big Spank at the Launchpad, marked the beginning of their exciting journey, and the name “The Riddims” was a fitting choice—derived from the Jamaican term “riddim,” referring to instrumental tracks used by DJs.
The Birth of High Desert Reggae
The Riddims’ sound, which they’ve dubbed “High Desert Reggae,” is a product of their diverse musical backgrounds and the rich cultural landscape of Albuquerque. Initially uncertain of their direction, the band decided to embrace their eclectic influences, allowing their music to flow naturally and authentically. This approach led to the creation of a sound that is both unique and deeply rooted in their New Mexican heritage. “We believe our sound is unique to us because of our cultural background,” the band shares, emphasizing that their music is a reflection of the unique experiences and hardships of life in Albuquerque—a city often misunderstood but rich in culture and talent.
Albuquerque’s Influence on Their Music

Albuquerque plays a significant role in shaping The Riddims’ music. The band’s pride in their hometown is evident, but they don’t shy away from acknowledging the challenges that come with living in a tough city. “Through that unique hardship, we’ve all experienced, it can shape you into a very unique person with very unique, cultural morals that are only found here in New Mexico,” they explain. For The Riddims, their music is a way to show the world that Albuquerque is more than just a setting for crime dramas; it’s a place of deep cultural richness and talent that deserves recognition.
Sharing the Stage with Legends
Over the years, The Riddims have been fortunate enough to share the stage with some of their musical heroes, including Stick Figure, The Wailers, Brother Ali, and Steel Pulse. However, a recent highlight for the band was backing reggae legend Sister Nancy for two performances in New Mexico. “It was absolutely blissful,” they recall, describing the experience as a true honor and a testament to how far they’ve come.
A New Single with Deep Meaning
Their latest single is a milestone in The Riddims’ journey. Recorded at the legendary 17th Street Studio in Costa Mesa—a studio that has hosted iconic artists like Sublime, Rebelution, and The Dirty Heads—the track holds special meaning for the band. Featuring horns by Tony Rinaldi of Iration and Eric Hershel of Rebelution, the single represents a new level of creative expression for the group. “We really opened up to a new level we have before creatively with this song and let all of our emotions hang out in the lyrics,” they reveal. The song’s message, about showing endless love even in the face of pain and recognizing the preciousness of time, resonates deeply with both the band and their fans.
Looking Ahead to 2024 and 2025
As The Riddims look to the future, they are filled with excitement and gratitude. “We have big plans moving into new cities and areas of the country, as well as international performances, new music, and new music videos,” they announce. The band is more motivated than ever to continue spreading their High Desert Reggae sound far and wide, with the support of their ever-growing fanbase.
In closing, The Riddims have a message for their supporters: “BE R

EADY! We have so much planned for the next chapter in our journey, and we are so excited to share it with all of you. We are extremely grateful for the love and support you have shown us so far, and we’re going to continue pushing hard to create bigger and better sounds and reach new areas of the country to spread Albuquerque music to the masses!”
As they gear up for what promises to be an exciting few years, The Riddims are poised to make an even bigger impact on the reggae music scene, all while staying true to their roots and their beloved Albuquerque.
