As he recalls, “We have so many wild and untamed spaces, and people who live the kind of lifestyles that go along with those places… I was raised on old country music and could literally watch these old songs come to life in my backyard.” His love for country music blossomed early on, nurtured by the sounds of legends like Hank Williams, Elvis Presley, Dolly Parton, and Willie Nelson, who his parents played constantly through their old country music box set. From those early influences, Bailey knew music was in his soul, and his path was set.

Bailey’s passion for music was evident from a young age. His parents recognized his musical gift and enrolled him in the church choir, which would become his first formal musical experience. This early exposure set him on the path of combining his love for singing with the guitar. “Once I figured out I could sing AND play guitar at the same time, that’s all I wanted to do,” he reflects.
Although Bailey was initially discouraged by the misconception that a musician could only find success by “beating the odds” in Nashville, he soon found inspiration in artists who were thriving outside the mainstream. Legends like Jason Boland and Robert Earl Keen, both pillars of the Red Dirt Country genre, showed him that success could be built on authentic music and a loyal fanbase without the need for radio airplay or stadium tours. Their influence reignited his drive to pursue music seriously, and it wasn’t long before he began performing live shows, with key support from people like Kathy Ortega, the owner of Hops and Dough Taproom, who gave Bailey his first performance opportunity.

In an industry filled with competition, Bailey believes his live shows are what truly set The Waylon Bailey Band apart. “The biggest thing that sets us apart is our live shows,” he explains. “I work so hard at pouring my emotions into every song, so the audience really feels it.” Bailey’s focus on creating an emotional connection with his audience is paying off. His fanbase is growing rapidly, and those who attend his shows can feel the passion he puts into every performance. The energy is palpable, and the experience is one of connection and escape.

It tells stories of hardships, heartbreak, poverty, drug addiction, prison… things people can truly identify with,” Bailey asserts. He takes a strong stance against what he calls the “turdship” dominating radio today, preferring to stick to his roots and what he believes is the heart of country music: sincerity, honesty, and storytelling.
For Bailey, songwriting is a deeply personal endeavor. While he admits that his life has been relatively fortunate, he draws inspiration from the struggles of others, particularly those in New Mexico, where issues like drug addiction and poverty are ever-present. “These stories really influence and inspire my thought process when writing songs,” he says. His lyrics reflect the realities of life and the stories that need to be told, offering listeners a glimpse into the lives of those who face hardship and resilience.
The Message of Connection and Escape
Bailey’s ultimate goal is simple: to provide an experience where people can escape the stress and chaos of daily life, even if just for a few hours. “I sincerely hope that people walk away from our shows feeling tired and relieved,” he says, with a laugh. “Tired because they just had an amazing time and relieved because they were maybe able to escape a hectic life for 3 hours and have some fun.” That’s the essence of Bailey’s music—creating a space where listeners can unwind, connect with the songs, and return to their own lives feeling refreshed.
Balancing Music and Life
When he’s not performing or working on music, Bailey juggles a career as a union plumber, a job that allows him to support his music dreams. Although the balance is difficult, especially with a full-time band and the demands of live performances, Bailey is committed to making it work. “Being a local, working musician truly is a full-time job,” he says. Outside of music, Bailey enjoys spending time with his wife, Xandra, watching their favorite shows, or relaxing with a fishing pole in hand. These simple pleasures provide a necessary reprieve from the pressures of his music career.
Dreaming Big, One Step at a Time
Looking toward the future, Bailey’s dreams are focused on making music his full-time career. “My dream is for my music career to be enough to pay the bills so it’s all I have to do,” he shares. The next milestone for his band is to record and release an album, an achievement he hopes will help solidify his place in the industry. “When we do, hopefully people will like it, and this thing continues to grow,” he says. But the ultimate goal? Performing on the Grand Ole Opry stage—a moment that would signify a major accomplishment in Bailey’s journey.
The Army’s Influence
Bailey’s path to music wasn’t always a clear one. Before finding his way, he served seven years in the U.S. Army as a red-legged artilleryman, an experience that transformed his life. “The Army instilled that discipline, drive, and a really big belief in myself that is paramount in this industry,” he says. The lessons of discipline and perseverance he learned in the Army have served him well in his music career, where the hard work and dedication needed to succeed are constant.
